Free Global Health Journal
The release of the first issue of Global Health: Science and Practice - Dedicated to what works in global health programs is an important moment in Public Health.
I am convinced the online, open-access and peer-reviewed journal can help to bridge the gap between research and practice in global health and provide valuable support for health program planners, implementers, and evaluators. The journal focuses -different than other health journals- on practical program implementation issues, detailed information on program components and implementation processes.
Key topics are related to health issues (e.g. child health, HIV/AIDS), programming models (e.g. community-based services, private-sector approaches), and cross-cutting issues (e.g. mHealth/eHealth, monitoring and evaluation). The website offers also instructions for interested authors, global health job listings, and comprehensive alert services.

Lindsey Dole created a poster series addressing women’s health, environmental reform, economic struggle, and war. All images were inspired by a song, in this case Joni Mitchell’s Big Yellow Taxi. The poster looks like a Jugendstil silk painting to me and reminds me that we often don’t appreciate our healthy body until we got sick.
Road Safety
The global poster campaign addresses the main contributing factors to road traffic death and injury in young adults: drink-driving, visibility, seat-belts, helmets and speeding. The posters by the UNWHO can be understood by people from any part of the world regardless of their culture, age, and literacy skills.

A fun tool is the free Man Reminder App. The app offers education around breast cancer, reminds on check-ups and self examinations or allows to send a man-o-gram, which are personalized messages send by a hot guy to a friend of yours.

It is only January and 47 states report widespread flu outbreaks, even though nearly half the people in the U.S. are vaccinated against the flu. The infographic illustrates the true costs of getting the flu and estimates that preventive measures can save $35 per person.
CDC provides a collection on what you should know for this influenza season and flu tracking online tools are available for all curious people who wonder if they live in a flu zone.
Transit Oriented Communities are Healthier
The infographic visualizes how walkable, bikable, and transit oriented communities support the health of a community. Residents are more physical active, have a lower body weight, suffer less traffic injuries and air pollution, and non-drivers are more mobile.
I got interested in the concept Transit Oriented Community and found the document Transit-Oriented Communities: A Primer on Key Concepts created by TransLink, the public transportation in Metro Vancouver. Transit-oriented communities are defined as
Places (regions, municipalities, neighborhoods) that facilitate a decreased reliance on the automobile by:
- focusing higher-density, mixed-use, pedestrian-friendly development within walking distance of frequent transit: and
- implementing mobility management measures to discourage unnecessary driving
