Racism Makes Me Sick Campaign

This new anti-racism campaign from Australia, which was launched yesterday, isn’t the common fight against racism. It is about the threat to public health racism can be. A range of health problems including high blood pressure and heart disease, depression, anxiety, low birth rate and premature birth can all be caused directly by people’s personal experiences of racism.

What a great way to bridge the gap between a social determinant of health and health outcomes!

The common use of anti-LGBT language is directly related to bullying and harassment of the LGBT community.

At the campaign website you find more information and ways to directly support the actions, such as adding a twitter counter of anti-LGBT language to your website.

Adult generations of today are less healthy than their counterparts of previous generations

Adult generations of today are less healthy than their counterparts of previous generations:...

Lift your Skirt for a Pap Smear

I love the positive and humorous approach of the little film that demonstrates what differences we can all make in our day-by-day life in order to protect the rainforest without feeling to overwhelmed by the task.
David McCandless is a data journalist who visualizes complex data into beautiful infographics. His newest health related work presents the leading causes of mortality from 1900 to 2000.

Most causes of death are contributed to cardiovascular diseases (e.g. stroke) and non-communicable diseases (e.g. diabetes), as well as infectious diseases (e.g. diarrhea).

Side Note: A non-communicable disease is not “communicated” from person to person, and better known as chronic disease. A communicable disease is “communicated” from person to person (or other carriers of the infection), and better known as infectious disease.

In 2012, 120 women have been killed in domestic attacks in...

In 2012, 120 women have been killed in domestic attacks in Italy…

Vivienne Westwood draws attention to domestic abuse using her mannequins. The British Designer showcases bruised models in shop windows at her Milan store. I like that the health message is delivered in an unexpected context and multiplies the awareness raising aspect.

If advertising works to promote smoking, it also works to inhibit the health risky behavior… The anti-smoking campaign Tips From Former Smokersby the CDC aims to counter the expenditures for marketing and promotion of cigarettes in the United States. In 2010, the costs for smoking ad’s were as high as $900,000 an hour or over $22 million a day.

Tips From Former Smokers was the first-ever paid national tobacco education campaign and features the stories and experience of former smokers who encourage current smokers to quit. Key messages include health consequences for smokers, but also for nonsmokers and how the life of loved ones are affected, e.g. by a smoking parent. Today, CDC launches a new round of advertisements of the successful campaign, congrats!
